Adriti

I stood on the balcony of my apartment, the late afternoon sun casting a warm glow over Mumbai. The excitement of my recent victory still lingered, but it was overshadowed by an unsettling feeling deep within me. I had worked hard to prove myself, yet Ruthvik’s mocking words echoed in my mind like an insistent drumbeat, reminding me of my challenges ahead.

That evening, during dinner with Nitya, the conversation inevitably turned to Aadarsh. “You really impressed him, you know,” Nitya said, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. “He’s a tough player, and you beat him! I mean, he’s practically the new star of the academy.”

I pushed my food around on my plate, a mixture of pride and anxiety swirling inside me. “Yeah, but he’s just one player. There are so many others who are better than me,” I muttered, my voice barely above a whisper.

“Stop that!” Nitya exclaimed, leaning across the table. “You’re amazing! You’ve come so far, and you have Ishaan cheering for you. You should be celebrating!”

I heart warmed at the mention of Ishaan. He had been a constant source of support, but a part of mine still felt unworthy of his admiration. I thought about our last practice session, where our playful banter had momentarily chased my insecurities away. But as soon as the laughter faded, the weight of expectations returned.

The next day, I stepped onto the court, my heart racing as I prepared for a practice match against Aadarsh. As we began to play, I felt the pressure mounting. Aadarsh was skillful, his movements sharp and calculated. He pushed me to my limits, making me sweat and forcing me to dig deep within myself for strength.

“Come on, Adriti! You can do better than that!” Ishaan’s voice rang out, cutting through my concentration. I caught a glimpse of him on the sidelines, a proud smile on his face. For a moment, my confidence surged, and i unleashed a powerful serve that caught Aadarsh off guard, scoring a point.

“Nice one!” he shouted, his competitive spirit shining through. The game continued, and with each point, I felt myself growing stronger, more determined. I could feel Ruthvik’s presence lurking in the back of my mind, but i pushed those thoughts aside, focusing solely on the game.

As we finished the match, i emerged victorious again, gasping for breath but exhilarated. “You’re getting better every day,” Aadarsh said, extending his hand to her. “Let’s train together more often. You’ve got the potential to really shine.”

Just as I was about to respond, Ruthvik sauntered onto the court, his smirk plastered across his face. “Oh, look who it is—the girl who thinks she’s a champion now,” he scoffed, his tone dripping with disdain. “Winning a match against Aadarsh doesn’t make you a star, Adriti. Don’t get too cocky.”

I felt my heart drop, the sting of his words cutting through mine newfound confidence. I opened my mouth to retort, but Ishaan stepped in, standing protectively beside me. “Why do you always have to be such a jerk, Ruthvik? Just because you’re bitter about losing doesn’t mean you can bring others down.”

Ruthvik rolled his eyes, unfazed by Ishaan’s defense. “Whatever. Enjoy your little victories while they last. Just remember, this is a long game, and you’re still at the beginning.”

As Ruthvik walked away, I turned to Ishaan, my frustration bubbling over. “Why does he always have to ruin everything? I thought I was past this!”

Ishaan took a step closer, his expression serious. “Adriti, don’t let him get to you. You’re stronger than you think. Use that anger to fuel your passion for the game. Channel it into your training.”

His words resonated with mine, igniting a new fire within. I nodded, determination flooding my veins. “You’re right. I won’t let him define me. I’m going to prove him wrong.”

With renewed vigor, I and Ishaan continued our practice, pushing each other to new heights. As we left the court that day, I felt a sense of clarity. I was on a journey, and while challenges lay ahead, I was determined to face them head-on.

(Little did she know, another obstacle was about to emerge—a surprise tournament on the horizon, where she would encounter not only fierce competitors but also test the depths of her own resilience. As she headed home, the thrill of the unknown sparked excitement within her, and she couldn’t help but wonder what awaited her next.)
